The show that occupied Earls Court in October 1966 played host to two new models from Browns Lane. To some these seemed to be interim offerings, not more than reassurances of Jaguar's continued independence after the surprise merger with the B.M.C empire three months earlier. The show did not generate the same enthusiasm for Jaguar's wares as that to which they were accustomed, the lack of a sports car on the Coventry stand diverted attention from yet another victory for refinement and economy, the 420G.

The model was not a novelty for the crowds; it was effectively a revised and improved version of the four year old Mk X. The package, already endowed with class-leading handling thanks to its all-independent suspension, carried over the 4,235cc power unit recently given to its predecessor and had gained Varamatic power-assisted steering as standard equipment, also becoming a touch more crash-regulation conscious with extra padding on the dashboard. It continued in production until 1970, slipping out to make way for Lyons' vision for the future of saloon manufacturing - the XJ6.

James Hull's 420G was delivered new to the former owner Frederick Winkle Esq. of Willenhall, Staffordshire, being purchased through local Jaguar agents, Attwood Garages of Wolverhampton, on 10th February 1970. A letter written by Mr Winkle's son at the time of sale confirms its incredibly modest mileage of under 20,000 from new.

This simple ownership and history has ensured that the car retains its original Owner's Service Policy, Handbook, Sales & Service Facilities book, its Maintenance Vouchers book, Routine maintenance poster together the with plastic folio in which they were supplied. The maintenance book notes only a service at 962 miles a month after its purchase and a service 30 years later at Pineridge Jaguar of Dorset at 19,165 miles, while a 1977 MoT states its mileage to have been 17,159.

The condition as one would imagine is extremely tidy and reflecting its limited use.
