Lot Essay
This type of Grecian-scrolled Bergere chair accompanied the fireside Grecian sofas that were introduced in the early 19th century, and was usually upholstered in leather appropriate for a library. These chairs, with their reeded and palm-flowered ornament, relate to the robust style of seat furniture illustrated in George Smith's Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guide, 1826. Another chair, of this pattern, was sold anonymously, Christie's South Kensington, 25 November 1998, lot 195.
