The dragonfly with moss agate and diamond bordered wings to the alternating ruby and diamond body and diamond collet eyes, millegrain setting, mounted in platinum and gold, circa 1900, 7.4 cm. long

Insects, such as the dragonfly became a recurrent motif of fin-de-siècle jewellery, exemplifying a preoccupation with nature and movement. Prized for their beauty, delicacy and fine lines, dragonflies, such as the one shown above, were often created with "wings so real that it might at any moment flutter into life and fly away".
