Lot Essay
This would appear to be an early work by Dame Laura Knight, who moved to Staithes in 1897 and married Harold Knight in 1903. Thereafter she gave up signing work under her maiden name of Johnson. The colouration and tonality are similar to her picture, exhibited as no. 49, in 'The Staithes Group' exhibition, Nottingham, 1993. The women, probably engaged in gutting fish, are wearing the bonnets typical of the Staithes community.
