Lot Essay

Bactrian camels were imported from Eastern Turkestan and Mongolia. They were used by the Court and the merchants for local transportations and were also the "ships of the desert" linking China to Central Asia, Samarkand, Persia and Syria.
For another example of large braying camel but with monster-mask packs, see The World's Great Collections, Oriental Ceramics, vol.5, 'The British Museum London', ill.7
