CHINA, SOUTHERN SONG DYNASTY, 12TH/13TH CENTURY

Lot Essay

Black and brown-glazed stonewares are typical from the Southern Song dynasty. They were made mainly in the Jiangxi province (Jizhou kilns) and Fujian province from South China. Tea bowls like the one presented here, enjoyed particular popularity in Japan. They are commonly known under their Japanese name temmoku ; in Chinese tianmu, from the Buddhist monastery in the Tianmu mountains (Zhejiang province) where they were first in use
Similar examples are illustrated in R. Krahl, Chinese Ceramics from the Meiyintang Collection, Vol.I, London 1994, pp.282 and 284
