Lot Essay

Initially German, Heilbuth was later a naturalised Frenchman. Studies in Munich, Anvers and Rome, led him to Gleyre's Paris studio in 1847. His romantic historical painting were much admired at the time. Later he would paint landscapes. In the war of 1870 he went to London where he was inspired much by the works of Turner. His works later exhibited his interest in the expression of light and atmosphere, though he did not develop an Impressionist style.
