Lot Essay

Ten Kate, a pupil of Cornelis Kruseman, travelled to Paris in 1841, where he studied with Ernest Meissonier, returning to the Hague in 1842. Famous for his smoothly painted historical scenes, five of his works are in the Historich Museum in Amsterdam. Ten Kate became a member of the Konikiljke Akademie and for several years he was the chairman of the society Artie et Amicitiae.
