FILLMORE, Millard S. (1800-1874). Partly printed check accomplished and signed ("Millard Fillmore Presdt."), Buffalo, N.Y., 10 January 1871. 1 page, oblong (2½ x 7 1/8 in.). Decorative types, scrolling design at left-hand margins, typographical border. An ornate check drawn on the former President's account with the Buffalo Savings Bank, directing payment of [$35.58] to Francis P. Murray. Fillmore adds a note recording that the funds in question are for the "Law Library County Contingent Fund." In his retirement Fillmore, a lawyer, helped establish and support a number of educational and cultural institutions in his native Buffalo. A VERY RARE CHECK: only two Fillmore checks are recorded at auction since 1975.
