A pair of George III silver soup-tureens and covers with Old Sheffield plated liners
London, 1805, mark possibly that of John Parker II
Each partly-fluted, slightly bombé vase-shaped, on circular foot chased with acanthus border, the body with two reeded handles with bearded mask terminals, with everted gadrooned rim, the plain plated liner on collet foot and with two ring handles, the flat cover with acanthus finial and foliate calyx, the body engraved with a coat-of-arms and a presentation inscription each within foliate mantling, one foot-rim further later engraved with a presentation inscription, each marked on foot-rim and cover

The inscription on the side of each reads, 'To George Hibbert Esqr. by the unanimous Vote of a General Court of the West India Dock Company on the 16th October, 1804 In grateful Testimony of his eminent Services in the Formation, Establishment and Direction of that grand useful and successful Undertaking'. The inscription on the foot-rim reads, 'This tureen formed part of a presentation of plate made to George Hibbert and was given by his great grandson, Arthur H. Holland-Hibbert, to his twin brother Sidney G. Holland, on his silver wedding, Jan. 23rd, 1908.'

The arms are those of Hibbert impaling Fonnereau, for George Hibbert (1757-1837) and his wife Elizabeth Margaret, daughter of Philip Fonnereau, whom he married in 1784. (2)
