Lot Essay

Duthuit notes that an edition of 110 was planned for sale by Les Peintres Graveurs Français. Matisse then decided to destroy the edition, but a dozen or so impressions were removed prior to this taking place. The present impression presumably come from this small number of surviving impressions.
