Lot Essay

Marble copies of the Apollino and the Venus de Medici became very popular with English collectors in the late 18th century. They were very often paired, as in miniature, on: The Chimneypiece of the painted room, Spencer House, London, illustrated, The Greek Revival, J. Mordaunt Crook, London 1972, pl.58; The Gallery of Thomas Hope's House, Deepdene, Surrey, Thomas Hope and the Neo-classical Idea, David Watkin, London 1968, plate 65.
