8o (163 x 110 mm). Title in rule border, woodcuts of Indian totemic signatures on L3r (p.79) and R4r (p.127). (Soiling throughout, title with repair at gutter, a few discreet marginal repair to other leaves, several catchwords and page numerals just shaved.) Contemporary dark calf, covers sparingly tooled with a double fillet, rounded spine (moderate wear to extremities, discreet repairs to spine, front free endleaf supplied). Provenance: John Dow (signature on last page); Jonathan and James Becker (signatures on last page). With original pen and ink drawings of Indians and colonial figures on front and back pastedowns captioned "Hilton charging the Indians with treachery," and "Tug of war for the tommyhawk."

FIRST EDITION, IN ORIGINAL BINDING, WITH CONTEMPORARY DRAWINGS OF THE INDIAN WARS. The best and most authoritative contemporary account of Queen Anne's War with the Indians (1702-1725), "faithfully stating harrowing facts with no attempt made to soften the ghastly deeds" (DAB). Penhallow's account is a book long recognized as "AMONG THE RAREST OF NEW ENGLAND IMPRINTS" (Field). This copy is unique in having an original autograph document of Penhallow inserted, and for being decorated with vigorous contemporary drawings of Indians. The author, sent to New England by the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel, abandoned the Church to pursue the law and politics, ultimately serving as Chief Justice and Recorder of Massachusetts.
