SMITH, Charles (1768-1808). The Monthly Military Repository. Respectfully Inscribed to the Military of the United States of America. New York: William A. Davis, for the Author, 1796 [vol. 1]; John Buel, for the Author, 1797 [vol. 2].
Two volumes in one, 8o (201 x 122 mm). Vol. 1: engraved portrait of George Washington; two plates "Scale of 250 Trioses" (one in facsimile). Four engraved folding maps: "A Plan of the Action at Breeds Hill, on the 17th of June 1775, Between American Forces and British Troop, Erroneously called Bunkers Hill" (backed with paper); "Map of the City of Quebec" (facsimile); "The Engagement on the White Plains the 28th of October 1776, between the American & British forces" (backed with paper); "Plan of the Position which the Army under Lt. Genl. Burgoine took at Saratoga" (backed with paper, lower 2" of image in facsimile); "Plan of the Siege of Savannah". Vol. 2: portrait of Gen. Anthony Wayne (facsimile). (Vol. 1 title supplied, vol. 2 title in facsimile.) Modern red half calf preserving original marbled boards.
Smith's scarce military history, bound from its original periodical issue. The military descriptions in the text were supplied from the writings of Baron Steuben and Gen. Horatio Gates. This copy, like most appearing in auction records and in OCLC, is incomplete. Due to the ephemeral nature of Smith's publication, and due to the fine quality of the maps which illustrated it, it is often found incomplete, with maps removed or supplied. Evans 30807; Howes S-581; Sabin 82379 (calling for, in all, 12 maps and portraits).
[With:] SMITH, Charles. The American War, from 1775 to 1783, with Plans. New York: Printed for Charles Smith, 1797.
