JOHONNET, Jackson. The Remarkable Adventures of Jackson Johonnet, of Massachusetts. Who served as a Soldier in the Western Army, in the Massachusetts Line, in the Expedition under General Harmar, and the Unfortunate General St. Clair. Containing an Account of his Captivity, Sufferings, and Escape from the Kickapoo Indians. Written by Himself, and published at the earnest Importunity of his Friends, for the Benefit of American Youth. Providence, 1793.
8o (203 x 127 mm). 15 pages. (Some staining and fraying.) Sewn as issued; red cloth portfolio. Provenance: Frank T. Siebert (his sale Sotheby's New York, 21 May 1999, lot 440).
A FIRST-HAND ACCOUNT OF ST. CLAIR'S DEFEAT. The original Lexington imprint of 1791 has not been located and it is presumed by most (though not by Siebert) to be a ghost. Several editions were issued simultaneously in 1793. Siebert's notes place this edition before the Boston edition. Johonnet describes his own treatment and that of his comrades at the hands of the Kickapoo. Most significantly, he relates the famous military defeat of Gen. Arthur St. Clair on 4 November 1791 when he was taken by surprise and his forces viciously defeated by a smaller group of Indians. The final three pages describe the defeat from the common soldier's view. Not in Ayer or Field. Alden Rhode Island 1313; Evans 25670; Howes J-176; Sabin 69374; Vail 950.
