[SAGE, Rufus B. (1817-1893)]. Scenes in the Rocky Mountains, and in Oregon, California, New Mexico, Texas, and the Grand Prairies; or Notes by the Way, During an Excurion of Three Years. Philadelphia: Carey & Hart, 1846.

8o (182 x 118 mm). Folding lithographed map after Sage by F. Michelin (old tape reinforcements along folds on verso). (Title a trifle foxed, some occasional pale browning.) Original green blind-decorated cloth, gilt-lettered on spine (lower joint renewed); green cloth folding case. Provenance: William J. Holliday (his sale Parke-Bernet, 22 April 1954, lot 969).

THE HOLLIDAY COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION OF SAGE'S "intelligent narrative of extensive travels from the Platte to the Arkansas, including the best contemporary account of Snively's abortive land-pirate expedition" (Howes). The map, printed too late for inclusion in all copies and therefore scarce, displays the earliest delineations of "Ne-braska" and is one of the most important of the early western maps. It is believed that only 100 copies of the book were issued with the map. Cowan pp. 548-9; Field 1345; Fifty Texas Rarities 30; Graff 3633; Howes S-16 ("b"); Mintz 402; Rader 2870; Sabin 74892; Streeter V:3049; Wagner-Camp-Becker 123:1; Wheat Mapping the Transmississippi West 527; Wheat Maps of the California Gold Rush 30.
