The first edition of this work appeared in 1847 with a quick succession of editions following celebrating the exploits of Alexander William Doliphan. At the pass of the Sacramento in late February 1847 Doniphan encountered a large force of Mexicans, which they routed, capturing large amounts of supplies. Doniphan lost only one man while the Mexicans counted 304 dead. Howes H-769.
