FIRST EDITION. The plates are after the author's husband, Seth Eastman, an accomplished artist and topographical draftsman. They depict Indians performing various rituals and activities such as burial, administering medicine, dancing, traveling, fishing, spearing muskrats and dressing a buffalo skin. "A beautiful book upon aboriginal manners and history, written by a lady and illustrated by her husband, both of whom were well fitted for the task by long residence among the Indians" (Field 477 note).
