2o (333 x 254 mm). 31 wood-engravings and map of Sacramento and Vicinity in text. Stabbed-and-sewn; brown cloth folding case.

FIRST EDITION, 2/4r with printed overslip correcting election results and with illustrations corresponding to those in the Streeter copy. "Barber and Baker compiled this early history of Sacramento from directories, city council records, newspaper files, and information supplied by such important early pioneers as J.A. Sutter, Reverend Benton, L.W. Hastings, and Colonel Zabriskie, as well as Barber and Baker's own recollections. The engravings afford the best systematic published pictorial study of a Gold Rush City. The publishers also issued pictorial letter sheets duplicative of many of the views in their book" (Kurutz 35a). Variant imprints and locations of illustrations are recorded. The primary difference is in the wrappers (not present here) which listed illustrations in differing locations. AII California 404; California Printing I:10; Cowan p. 34; Howes B-127; Lozito 4; Rocq 6618.
