1965 VAUXHALL VX 4/90 FC FOUR DOOR SALOON

Registration No. MVW 173C
Chassis No. 5067576

Engine: four cylinders in line, overhead valves, twin Zenith carburettors, 1,594cc, 86bhp at 5,200rpm; Gearbox: four speed manual; Suspension: front, independent coils, rear, semi-elliptic leaf springs; Brakes: servo-assisted discs to the front, drums to the rear. Right hand drive.

The VX 4/90 was first introduced alongside the revamped Victor in 1961. It was effectively a Victor with better performance courtesy of an extra carburettor and higher compression ratio, and with a touch more luxury inside with separate front seats instead of the usual bench. This higher specification was communicated to the man on the street by a different grille and coloured side stripe, two characteristics which were carried over when the FB series became the FC in 1964. The VX 4/90 still offered a little bit more to the Victor-buyer, with more acceleration (0-50 in 11.0 seconds as opposed to 14.5), and a top speed of 89mph. Oddly enough it also offered marginally better fuel consumption, and yet only 13,500 units were manufactured during its three year lifespan compared to almost 220,000 FC Victors.

The example offered here was first registered on 18th August 1965, and is dashing in its Storm Grey and black stripe, which is original and in good condition. This dour exterior is juxtaposed wonderfully by the interior which still sports period tiger-print seat covers (just visible in this photograph). Although not original, this personalisation lends this car a unique character and offers an insight into the driver of the late Sixties' "hot Vauxhall", a fore-runner of the Nova generation. As such it represents a wonderful piece of social history. This car is sold with its V5 document.
