1940 STANDARD FLYING EIGHT TWO DOOR SALOON
Registration No. JPF 674
Chassis No. N25947 DL
Engine No. 27722
Black with tan leather interior
Engine: four cylinder, side valve, 1,021cc; Gearbox: three speed manual with synchromesh; Suspension: front, independent by transverse leaf spring, rear, semi-elliptic leaf spring; Brakes: four wheel drum. Right hand drive
Standard's Flying Eight was introduced in 1939 and was an entirely new model for the Coventry based concern. It epitomised styling and features of the times having painted radiator grille, enveloped wings and no running boards and pressed-steel wheels. To increase its appeal was the long stoke, 1,021cc engine, which cleverly gave it favourable road tax status.
A 1958 continuation log book for this Standard, substantiates its original registration date of 23rd April 1940, and the pre-fix of 'JPF' confirms its location of first registration as being within the jurisdiction of Surrey County Council. Precisely who the original owner was is not known, nor their town of residence, but the log book does inform us today that by 1956 it was still in this area, being in the ownership of Norman Boylett of Pirbright, Surrey. Mr Boylett was the owner until August 1968 when it is recorded as having been transferred to Sharoe Green Garage of Preston. An MoT from this garage dated 19th June 1968 is still with the car, and from this timing it is believed that the Sharpe Family would have purchased the Standard shortly after then.
This Flying Eight has spent many years in Museum storage and is consequently in cosmetically good order and presents well, it has not been run for many years however and will require re-commissioning.
