Chinese School, Circa 1783
Six studies of Chinese boats and sampans of Canton and the neighbouring provinces, gouache on paper, together with photocopied original corresponding documentation -- each 10¼in. x 14in. (26cm x 35.5cm), framed and glazed.
This group of paintings were originally from a set of 120, which were commissioned by the Director of the Swedish East India Company, circa 1783. In 1784, the set was brought to Stockholm by the Swedish ship The GUstavus III together with original documentation in Swedish giving the name of each boat, its place of origin and function. (6)
