Lot Essay

Shamian was originally a sandbank adjacent to the Western suburbs in Canton. After the final destruction of the hongs in 1856, the factories moved temporarily to Honam, but because of the contant threat of hostilities, the British leased the sandbank, which they filled and built upon.
