An unusual 19th-Century English desk thermometer and compass,
signed W & S JONES 30 HOLBORN in the form of a hexagonal section tapering column covered with a stained ivory veneer, the circular top with floating card compass sundial signed on the card T. Staight London with brass gnomon (end snapped off), the card with two hour scales IIII-XII, I-VIII and 1-12 (x2), the surround with the names of various cities and locations around the world, the edge carved to represent a fringe of leaves, the thermometer mounted on an ivory plaque inset on one side of the column and marked for FREEZING, TEMPERATE, BLOOD HEAT and FEVER HEAT, on a sectionally veneered hexagonal foot, contained in a purple plush-lined hexagonal-section mahogany casket with two brass hooks and eyes -- 18.5cm.
