Two early 19th-Century English 12-inch table globes,
THE NEW TWELVE INCH BRITISH Terrestrial Globe REPRESENTING THE ACCURATE POSITIONS OF THE PRINCIPAL KNOWN PLACES OF THE EARTH FROM THE DISCOVERIES OF CAPTAIN COOK AND SUBSEQUENT CIRCUMNAVIGATORS TO THE PRESENT PERIOD 1802 Manufactured [..] in 16 Salisbury Square With Additions to 1807.1814, with a vendor's label [..]Sloanes laid over the original name of T.M. Bardin, made up of twelve hand-coloured engraved gores and two polar calottes with printed hour dials, with graduated equatorial and ecliptic, the Meridian of Greenwich ungraduated, the oceans with an analemma and well-detailed with notes and explorer's tracks, the continents with nation states outlined in green or red and shaded green, orange and yellow, showing towns, cities, rivers, mountains, deserts and caravan routes and well-detailed with further notes (much old abrasion and dirt, severe lightly-repaired cracking to southern Atlantic under later varnish);
the NEW TWELVE INCH British Celestial Globe Containing the exact positions of more than 3800 FIX'D STARS, Nebulæ, Planetary Nebulæ &c. according to the Latest Discoveries and Observations, of DrMaskelyne, DrHerschell and other eminent Astronomers, And adjusted to the present period 1800 with an overlaid cartouche nearby for SOLD BY W. & S. JONES, Holborn, London, made up of twelve hand-coloured engraved gores laid to the ecliptic poles, the axis through the celestial poles, each printed with an hour dial, with graduated equatorial, colures and ecliptic, the last with twilight zone, the pictorial constellations with stars to seven orders of magnitude with nebulæ and planetary nebulæ and variously labelled with Arabic numerals and Greek and Roman letters (much old abrasion and dirt, some dents, severe repaired cracking to the equator and elsewhere, under later varnish);
both with engraved brass hour dial an stamped meridian, hand-coloured engraved horizon paper with degrees of amplitude and azimuth, compass directions, calendar and Zodiac scales and an equation of time (severe abrasions and dirt and some paper loss under later varnish), raised on a mahogany table stand with four curved quadrant supports to the central pillar with three inswept legs, one set united by battens to a central wooden disc, the other set with three curved and scroll shaped battens mounted between (both lacking meridian support, later varnish, one with a detached foot) -- 62cm.
