A GEORGE IV IRISH TWO-COLOUR GOLD AND BOG OAK SNUFF-BOX
mark of Arthur O'Neill, Dublin, circa 1820, also struck with retailer's mark of Jacob West
Circular, with wood inset base and cover, the gold-mounted base and detachable cover each with cast and chased floral and foliate border and slightly waisted sides, the wood cover applied with three paste pear-shaped stones in the form of a shamrock, in gold mount and with chased stem, the interior of the cover finely engraved with a scene of Dublin Castle with banner above engraved CASTLE OF DUBLIN , and with mounted soldiers on the parade ground below, the sides engraved with inscriptions, marked inside base of box
3 3/8 in. (87 mm.) diam.
The inscription on the side of the lid reads 'Dam, Òp, azar admamt éimoñac' and on the base, 'DAIR OR AGAS ADMAINT EIRIONNACH' both translating as 'Oak, gold and Irish wood'
