A SWISS FOUR-COLOUR GOLD SNUFF-BOX SET WITH AN ENAMEL MINIATURE
Geneva, circa 1780/1790, with prestige marks including rubbed maker's marks, later struck with the post-1838 French provincial warranty mark for gold and the French post-1864 import mark for gold
Oval box, the cover, side panels and base engine-turned with horizontal strips of reeding alternating with strips of scalework, the lid centred by an oval enamel miniature depicting a scène galante of a young fruit-seller offering a pear to a young peasant girl, painted en grisaille against a pink ground, within a frosted gold mount chased with flowers, the four side dividers chased with x-shaped foliate scrolls on a matted ground, the sablé borders chased with a garland of ribbons twisted with flowerheads and interspersed with flowers
