Lot Essay
This box is sold with a lock of hair purpotedly belonging to Señora Gertrudin Mendoza y Xara de La Puerta and an accompanying handwritten note in Spanish states that she left one daughter who married a Division General, Señor Ramon Herrera and had four sons. The first son was a finance officer in the Cuzco Post Office; the third son was a state advisor and member of the Superior Court of Justice and the fourth son (Luis de La Puerta) held various positions including General and War Minister of the Navy and Minister of Foreign Affairs and President of the Advisory Committee and was called by the Constitution to be President of the Republic of Peru in the absence of the head of State, a position he filled in 1879. The initials on the side of this box LLP may refer to him.
