A LOUIS XVI-STYLE JEWELLED AND ENAMELLED GOLD SNUFF-BOX

Rectangular box with canted corners, the cover inset with a finely painted octagonal enamel miniature with a full-length portrait of Queen Marie-Antoinette in pink dress and yellow stole standing in a park landscape with castle background, against a semi-translucent dark blue guilloché sunburst ground, within a splendid jewelled frame set with 46 old-cut diamonds (total gross weight between 15 and 17 carat), the base inset with a matching enamel plaque depicting the assassination of Caesar, the four long sides enamelled in translucent blue on a guilloché ground with engraved gold arches, the four short corner sides enamelled with animals, including a hound, a lion, a fox and a cockerel on a similar blue ground, the front side with small old-cut diamond set thumbpiece, three jewelled initials 'LLP' below

Lot Essay

This box is sold with a lock of hair purpotedly belonging to Señora Gertrudin Mendoza y Xara de La Puerta and an accompanying handwritten note in Spanish states that she left one daughter who married a Division General, Señor Ramon Herrera and had four sons. The first son was a finance officer in the Cuzco Post Office; the third son was a state advisor and member of the Superior Court of Justice and the fourth son (Luis de La Puerta) held various positions including General and War Minister of the Navy and Minister of Foreign Affairs and President of the Advisory Committee and was called by the Constitution to be President of the Republic of Peru in the absence of the head of State, a position he filled in 1879. The initials on the side of this box LLP may refer to him.
