oval, 1 1/8 in. (28 mm.) high, reeded gold mount, set on the lid of a circular blonde tortoiseshell bonbonnière with stamped gold mounts and decorated with a pattern of two-colour gold piqué-posé of lilies surmounted by arches

Lot Essay

Louis-Philippe-Joseph, Duke of Montpensier from birth until 1752, Duke of Chartres 1752-1785 and Duke of Orléans from 1785, espoused the cause of the French Revolution and assumed the name of Philippe-Egalité. He voted for the death of his cousin King Louis XVI but was beheaded himself on 6 November 1793. He was the father of Louis-Philippe, King of the French, 1830-1848.
