Lot Essay

Gilbert Stuart (1755-1828) executed numerous portraits of George Washington and his contemporaries, including Benjamin West and Sir Joshua Reynolds, P.R.A. His portraits of the American president have reached iconic status and have been widely copied by painters and miniaturists. An exhibition dedicated to the work of Gilbert Stuart at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, runs to July 2005.
