Lot Essay

Emperor Francis I married his first cousin Maria Theresa, eldest daughter of Ferdinando I, King of the Two Sicilies, as his second wife and had issue.
An almost identical pair in a double-sided locket, also attributed to Guérard, is illustrated in J. Nimmergut/A.-M. Wager, Miniaturen. Dosen, Munich, 1982, no. 166, illustrated p. 171 (with the Empress mis-identified).
