MENESTRIER, Claude-François (1631-1705). Bibliotheque curieuse et instructive de divers ouvrages anciens & modernes, de litterature & des arts. Ouverte pour les personnes qui aiment les lettres. Trevoux: Estiennne Ganeau, 1704.

2 volumes in one, 12o (144 x 84mm). Engraved additional titles by F. Erpinger, 1 folding engraved plate. Contemporary French speckled calf, spine gilt in six compartments with raised bands, brown morocco lettering-piece in the second, the other compartments with repeat decoration in gilt, marbled endpapers (surface of leather scuffed, spine chipped at head and foot, joints rubbed).

This scarce volume, the final work of a prolific French scholar, was intended as both a reading guide and an acquisitions list for the readers and the librarian of the newly opened Bibliothèque Louis-Auguste at Trevoux, created for his subjects by the Sovereign Prince of Dombes, Louis-Auguste de Bourbon, Duc de Maine, a legitimized son of Louis XIV, on whom the duchy had been bestowed after being taken away from Mlle. de Montpensier, 'La Grande Mademoiselle'. Not in the standard bibliographies, although there are copies in both the Bibliothèque Nationale and the British Library.
