FIRST EDITION. Brunet compiled this guide as a successor to Gabriel Peignot's Essai of 1804 and Henri-Joseph Hoyois' Musée bibliographique of 1837. It describes all printed books sold at auction for more than 1000 francs, as well as manuscripts and English books beyond that level, the most expensively published new books (Audubon, Spix, Themminck, Vieillot, etc.), prints sold at auction for more than 1000 francs, and paintings sold for more than 50,000 francs (Bronzino, Dürer, Ingres, Rembrandt, Titian, Velazquez, etc.) The edition was limited to 250 numbered copies and a VELLUM ISSUE OF ONLY TWO COPIES.
