PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY MERTON TO BERNARD BRESLAUER on the front free endpaper: "To Bernard Breslauer from his friend Wilfred Merton 31 August, 1948." Laid is a typed letter signed from A. Chester Beatty to Breslauer on Merton's death (9 November 1957): "We have both lost, as you say, a very dear friend. He was a very fine and noble character..." and an autograph letter signed from Fritz(?) Merton to Breslauer on the death of Merton (8 November 1957): "...He has requested in his will that you should be consulted about the selling of his library..."
