FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE, with top edge stained yellow, with "lay" in line 5 p. 86 and "the" in line 3 on p. 251 in broken type. PRESENTATION COPY inscribed by Anderson on the front free endpaper: "To Henry J. Smith, With Regards, Sherwood Anderson." The Chicago-based journalist and author, Henry Justin Smith, was an early friend and supportor of Anderson. He also helped the careers of such writers as Carl Sandburg, Ben Hecht, Harry Hansen, as well as other mid-Western authors. Inscribed copies of this title are SCARCE. Sheehy & Lohf 9.
