FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed by Caldwell on the front endpaper: "For Billie Wolfson with the best wishes of Erskine Caldwell." One of Caldwell's most famous works, the novel takes a stark and realistic look at rural Georgia. The phrase "Tobacco Road," used to signify the environment that nurtured poor, ill-educated and volatile whites, entered the American consciousness almost immediately after the book was published. An adaption of Tobacco Road was written for the stage, with little input from Caldwell, and a 1941 film version was released, which differed greatly from the novel.
