Lot Essay

Galestruzzi trained in Florence in the studio of Francesco Furini before moving to Rome, where he became a member of the Accademia di San Luca in 1652. Two pictures by him are known, but etchings form the greater part of his surviving output, many strongly influenced by Stefano della Bella, who may have instructed him in printmaking. The present drawing is close in both feeling and handling to Galestruzzi's etched series of Tritons and Sea Monsters (Bartsch 21-38).
