A George II black japanned longcase clock, circa 1730
The hood with glazed side panels and later spandrel frets, the trunk door decorated with gilt chinoiserie, shortened plinth, the 12 in. wide brass dial with mask and foliate spandrels to silvered Roman and Arabic chapter ring with fleur-de-lys half hour markers, matted centre with subsidiary seconds ring and engraving around the square date aperture, original steel hands, with silvered convex disc to the arch signed Hewes/Carter/Cambridge, the eight day movement with five ringed pillars, anchor escapement, rack strike and trip repeat on bell -- 84¾ in. (215 cm.) high
