Lot Essay

After the picture, of the same dimensions, by van Dyck in the Collection of the Duke of Buccleuch and Queensberry, Boughton House (for W.A. Liedtke's agrument supporting the attribution of the Boughton set of sketches to van Dyck see W.A. Liedtke, Flemish Paintings in the Metropolis Museum of Art, New York, 1984). This en grisaille picture was subsequently engraved by Lucas Vorsterman (Wibiral, 92). The picture is also known in five other versions, all in reverse, including examples in the Nasjonalgalleriet, Oslo, and in the Collection on the Duke of Bedford, Woburn Abbey.
Karel van Mallery was a draughtsman, engraver adn print dealer in Antwerp.
