In that time his name has become synonymous with quality period lighting, modern lighting design and now modern furniture design. With branches all over the UK, as well as Japan, and soon to open in New York. He now runs a business empire supplying a global market following in the great British tradition of successful entrepreneurs who started from humble beginnings. Before he caught the lighting bug he recalls selling old bentwood balloon back chairs on a stall on Carnaby Street, that he used to paint with the Union Jack. Christopher Wray's career has been a fascinating one; he began as an actor in television shows like Z Cars and No Hiding Place, but given the precarious nature of the profession his agent suggested that he also had a sideline and so, this lead to his early dealings on Carnaby Street, soon followed by a more permanent venue at the Chelsea Antique's Market. The market on the King's Road was at the epicentre of the swinging 60's in London, and amongst those frequenting Christopher's stall were many well-known names such as Twiggy, Dusty Springfield, Justin de Villeneuve and Terence Conran. As the business grew more shops followed including the former post office at 600 King's Road, before moving to his present three storey shop, known as Christopher Wray's Lighting Emporium at 591-593 King's Road. During this time, some thirty years ago as the business started to thrive, Christopher and his wife Jill moved from a small house overlooking the Thames in Deodar Road, Putney to a large Edwardian house on Putney Heath. It was here that his children grew up and over the years he filled the house with some of the better discoveries of period lighting. Now that the children have left home Christopher and Jill have decided to move on, and have purchased a small apartment once again overlooking the Thames. It is Christopher and Jill's hope that the contents of their former house on Putney Heath will inspire a new generation of people to collect and to enjoy these objects in their own homes.
