Lot Essay

The present cast of Panthère saisissant un cerf, with its three-tiered grooved base, is an example of the second version of this model, the earlier variant, offered from 1845, having a wholly naturalistic base. This version was offered from 1857, along with its pendant, Tigre surprenant un antilope, and after 1876 was edited together with the first version by Barbedienne (see M. Poletti & A. Richarme, Barye, Catalogue raisonné des Sculptures, Paris, 2000, p. 216, no. A81(2)).

Another cast of this model sold in these rooms, 25 April 2003, lot 136 ($29,875).
