Arte de la Lengua Zebuana. [Sampaloc: Convento de PP. Franciscanos, 1801?] 4° (191 x 135mm). Printed on rice paper, complete, with the Table. (B4 torn, some browning, neat closed tears throughout, a few short tears in outer margins.) Red morocco gilt by Lobstein & Laurenchet, gilt edges.
FIRST EDITION RARITY and first study of the language of the island of Cebu. The work was printed in secret, without a title page, by the Augustinian Encina. From the notes by Encina in the text, Pardo de Tavera suspected an earlier edition had been published but found no trace of one. Palau and Retana differ on the date of publication, from 1801 to 1804.
