JOAQUIN MARTINEZ DE ZUÑIGA (1760-1818)

Historia de las Islas Philipinas, compuesta por el R.P. Lector Fr. Joaquin Martinez de Zuñiga del order de San Augustin. Sampaloc: Por Fr. Pedro Argüelles de la Concepcion Religioso Francisco, 1803. 4° (202 x 150mm). Large woodcut tail-piece, incorrectly paginated, jumping from p.471-512 but complete. (Minor worm hole in upper margin of a few preliminaries.) Later tree calf, gilt bordered, gilt devices at corners.

AN EXCELLENT COPY OF THE VERY RARE FIRST EDITION of this popular classic compiled from the voluminous records of the Augustinian fathers "so that readers might have the history of the Philippines in small compass", describing the islands, the native inhabitants and a chronological history from their discovery in 1519 to the English assault on Manila in 1762, with chapters on the islands' political, religious and economic development. Left in manuscript when he died were Zuñiga's additions and corrections to Le Gentil's 'Voyage' to the Philippines. Provenance: Al. Malavois (name label on foot of spine). Palau 156332; Retana 467; Robertson 131; Tavera 1631.
