Histoire abrégée de la mer du Sud, ornée de plusiers cartes; Dediée au Roi, et composée pour l'education de Mgr. le Dauphin. Paris: Chez P. Didot L'Aîné, 1791. 3 vols. 8° and 2° Atlas (223 x 145 and 294 x 230). Text with 9 engraved maps on 7 folding plates and 3 engraved plates, with half-titles, Dedication leaf cancel, and separate title to the Mémoire, preceded and followed by 2 leaves Avertissement. (Light browning.) Atlas with 11 large folding maps and coastal profiles. (Some slight off-setting.) Text in contemporary tree calf gilt, patterned boards. Atlas uncut in contemporary calf gilt and boards. (Some slight off-setting, 1 repaired at fold). Provenance: Contemporary engraved bookplate of H. Trouchin.
FIRST EDITION WITH THE VERY RARE ATLAS of an excellent compilation of Pacific Voyages from Balboa to Cook and Bligh by the 'Premier Valet de Chambre' to Louis XV and Gouveneur du Louvre. This is an invaluable summary of contemporary geographical knowledge with an abundance of historical, sometimes polemical, commentary and accompanied by the rare Atlas of route maps, comparative charts and discoveries in the Pacific. Vol. II has the separately paginated pamphlet advocating the building of a canal from the Atlantic to the Pacific across the Isthmus of Darien, with the advantages and disadvantages of various Nicaraguan ports, followed by the Mémoire on the French discovery of the 'Arsacides' Islands [the Solomon Islands] mistaken by the English for Terra Australis. Also with La Borde's proposal to raise a subscription for a voyage in search of La Pérouse. Only some copies contain the cancel leaf dedication to the king, the inclusion of which cost La Borde his head in 1794. Hill 956. Sabin 38426.
