Lot Essay
Several pieces from this service in the Royal Collection in Stockholm are illustrated by J. Wirgin, Fran Kina till Europa, Stockholm, 1998, p. 161, no. 171. Dr. Wirgin explains that this service was ordered in 1796 by Prince Fredrik Adolf, who at the time was the Duke of Östergötlands and owned Tullgarns castle. Although the service was ready in circa 1800, it did not arrive in Sweden until 1805, by which time Prince Fredrik Adolf had died. His sister, Princess Sophia Albertina, inherited the castle, and the service was paid for and presented to her by King Gustav IV. The service was in 1954 given to the Royal Collection in Stockholm by King Gustav VI, and to this day approximately 180 pieces from the service remain there. It is extremely rare for a piece such as the present lot to appear on the open market.
