The bearded sleeping figure wearing a large straw hat, voluminous robes and holding a rosary, reclining on a straw mat and leaning on the back of sleeping tiger, the back of the figure with two impressed marks, all under a creamy white glaze

Lot Essay

One of the incised marks on this figure reads Dehua, the other in a double gourd is known as the 'fisherman's mark' and reads Pu ji yu ren (virtue extending to fishermen).

Fuhu (Tiger Tamer) Luohan was one of the eighteen luohan, and is often thought to be a manifestation of Buddha Maitreya.
