Lot Essay

Francis Charles Seymour-Conway, 3rd Marquis of Hertford, KG (1777-1842) succeeded his father in 1822. He was a connoisseur and advised the Prince Regent on the formation of his collection of Dutch seventeenth century paintings. A number of paintings from his own collection are now in the Wallace Collection, London.
The original portrait by Sir Thomas Lawrence is now in the National Art Gallery, Washington, D.C.
