Muromachi - Momoyama Period (16th - 17th Century)
The mokko-shaped box and cover decorated with a bird carrying a fish over waves, the bird and fish in takamaki-e and the waves in usu-niku-takamaki-e, the gilt-copper cord kanemono in the form of tachibana mon and the cover cut away on four sides to reveal the kanemono on the red-lacquered cloth riser of the box, the interior of box and cover in rich gyobu and the base of the box in sparse gyobu

The subject is a reference to Shigeuji, an archer in Nitta no Yoshisada's army awaiting the attack of Ashikaga Takauji's fleet at Wada no Misaki, Minato-gawa, in 1336, who saw a seabird carrying a fish flying towards the enemy boats.
