A SUZURIBAKO [writing box]
Attributed to Hanzan, Edo Period (18th Century)
The exterior decorated in kijimakie, the grain of the sugi [cedar-wood] being part of the decoration, with the poet Hitomaro, inlaid and lacquered in two colours of pale green-glazed ceramic, his robe lacquered in gold and dark red usu-niku-takamaki-e with tsukegaki and kirikane in the form of mon, the head, hands and poetry paper in white ceramic, the hakama [wide court trousers] inlaid in pewter with wisteria mon in gold hiramaki-e, the eboshi in dark, reddish brown takamaki-e, sprinkled with powdered shell, the interior with the sails of fishing boats on a roiro sea with waves in hiramaki-e beneath a full moon, represented by the circular silver mizuire, the interior of the cover with two shikishi [poem cards] over a roiro ground, black lacquer base, the rims in sabi-nuri [rust textured brown lacquer], slight restoration
