Ryukyu Islands, Edo Period (Late 17th - Early 18th Century)
The rectangular box with flushfitting overhanging, slightly domed, cover, the black lacquer ground decorated in gold and black hiramaki-e, takamaki-e and inlaid in mother of pearl, with stylized melons, the interior with a tray fitted with slate and copper-gilt waterdropper modelled as a shishi, red lacquer interiors, slight old wear
